New chapter of "The Alien Ship" almost ready...

I have a new chapter of the story The Alien Ship almost ready for posting and I will be posting it at the usual places soon. I've also been continuing work on the sequel to The Last of His Kind and I have more than 10,000 words written in that story so far. I'm keeping the sequel under wraps until it is finished as far as the content of the story is concerned but I will be commenting on the progress from time to time.

I really like my new MacBook Pro and I take it out with me when I am working or just going out for a walk. I discovered that it's just small enough to fit in the laptop pocket of my backpack so I can carry it pretty easily. One of the things I like about this computer is it doesn't seem to have a fan and that improves the battery life considerably. And after downloading and installing OpenOffice I'm able to do my writing on it, too.

Progress on stories, more...

I continue to work on my writing and I am making progress on some new chapters that I will be making available as soon as they are ready. I am also working on the sequel to The Last of His Kind and making good progress with it. I'm not going to be positing this story anywhere until it is finished though and in fact that is going to be my new policy on publication of my writing from now on. Probably I will publish it first in the Amazon Kindle Store and then in other places. Even if you don't have a Kindle you can still read the books for it using their free Kindle Reader for the PC .

I really like my new MacBook Pro and I just discovered that I can also make the thing dual boot Windows as well as Mac. Basically they already have a tool to split the partition on the drive and then install Windows on the new partition split off from the old one. Of course I will have to provide my own copy of Windows but since I already have a lot of those that part isn't a problem. I haven't decided to do this yet but I have to admit that I'm tempted.

It seems that ebooks and ebook readers are starting to take off as a product class, though I am not sure how long the increasing quantity of different book readers will last. I think the time will come when they will have to consolidate into a smaller number of mutually compatible devices and probably become commodities so far as the hardware is concerned. But it's actually not the reader itself that is important, it's the ebook stores associated with them that are important. The associated book store makes it easy for the users to buy books and download them to their readers, in my view that is actually much easier than going to a physical book store.

I got a MacBook Pro...

I went and bought myself an Apple MacBook Pro laptop computer as well as one of the iPad tablet computers. It's a little bit different than what I have used up until now, though since I have done some work with Linux and FreeBSD it's only a little bit of extra effort to learn it. All in all the two are a nice addition to my computer collection.

I'm still working with my writing though I am also having to start putting some effort into looking for my next software development gig, which after all is what pays my bills. But I am working on new chapters for the unfinished stories on StoriesOnline as well as some stuff that I haven't published yet.

I've decided to get a MAC

I finally decided to get myself an Apple Macintosh computer to add to my collection. I have quite a number of PC computers that run Windows, Linux, or something similar, but so far I have managed never to have a Mac. This is a bit inconsistent with my computing philosophy that everything is is just a tool in the toolbox and you pull out whatever tool best fits the job. I know there at least some things that a Macintosh can do better than other computers but somehow I managed not to get one. I'm not sure why that is but I'm going to change it. And having a Macintosh on hand will get me entry into the world of developing apps for iPhone and iPad, which is big and hot right now.

I now have two ebooks that I have published on my usual places such as Lulu and others, with more on the way. I'm also going to be publishing a line of non-fiction ebooks just to see how well those do compared to the fiction titles. I don't really expect to get rich from this but I'm hoping it can become a fairly stable supplement to my income as time goes on. Since the number one enemy of any author is obscurity I will be promoting my writing more and more as time goes on.

Writing, etc.

I continue to work on my writing projects as well as developing the business knowledge about publishing them. Just like I am with software development I am interested in the business aspects of writing as much as writing itself. So I am working on developing the various channels by which my work can be distributed and sold. I am also exploring the various different avenues by which I can advertise the books that I have published.

I just joined the Smashwords affiliate program in addition to using them as one of my distribution channels for my writing. I will be adding other affiliates to my sites from time to time.

Software project done, back to writing..

I finished up my software development contract earlier this week which means that, for the moment at least, I am unemployed and so have more time for writing. I'm taking a few days off before I start looking for my next software development gig, and during that time I hope to be able to spend some time working on some of my unfinished writing projects.

I have added a new outlet for the commercial version of my books, smashwords.com. So far I have made two stories available there:

The Last of His Kind

Worlds of Probability

Different ebook formats...

I have been studying about the different types of ebook file formats and the latest electronic book readers that have been coming out and I am working to make my books and other writing available for as many different ones as I can. I bought an Amazon Kindle a couple of months back as well as downloaded Kindle reader software for my computer and iPod touch.

In addition to Lulu I have also published The Last of His Kind in the Amazon Kindle store and for the same price as I'm selling it for on Lulu. Even if you don't have a Kindle you can download the free Kindle reader software for your computer and use that instead. I've been looking at some of the other ebook readers and I am curious to see what the Apple iPad will look like when it comes out, and what it can do.

I am currently working on a new chapter for my story The Alien Ship and while I make no promises about when it will be ready I am working on it and it's well along. When it's done I'll post it at the usual places I have been posting my stories.

What's happening...

I am continuing work on my existing in-progress stories as well as several that I have recently started. I know I haven't posted much on the public sites recently but I am still around and still writing. When I have something ready to release I will post them at my usual places.

I have started working on a sequel to The Last of His Kind though I am just getting started with it. I had a lot of fun writing the first episode and the new one will likely prove to be just as fun. I think I am going to do the sequel differently though, this time I am going to hold the story until it is completely finished before releasing it. I may also release it first as a for-pay ebook and then promote it by releasing chapters once a week or so.
